OFFICE OF THE UNDER SECRETARY FOR HEALTH

November 10, 2025

Veterans Day

Colleagues,

Tomorrow, we celebrate the service of our nation’s most dedicated, heroic, and patriotic citizens – our Veterans. This Veterans Day is unique as we inch closer to America’s 250th anniversary, a milestone that reminds us of the enduring spirit and resilience of our great nation and those who have lived and died in service to the cause of freedom.

I would like to acknowledge and express my gratitude to the nearly 86,000 Veterans serving as employees in VHA. After their distinguished military careers, they continue to serve their brothers and sisters in arms in various capacities within VA. Whether it's through providing medical care, administrative support, or essential services, these remarkable individuals ensure that their commitment to their fellow Veterans remains steadfast.

Consider, for example, a former Army medic who now works as a nurse at one of our medical centers, providing compassionate care to Veterans in need. Or the Marine Corps Veteran who serves as a counselor, offering support and guidance to those navigating the transition to civilian life. These individuals embody the true spirit of service, demonstrating that their dedication to their country and comrades extends far beyond the battlefield.

To all our Veteran employees continuing to serve here at VA, we honor your courage, patriotism, and sacrifice—thank you. Your unwavering devotion to your fellow Veterans enriches our organization and ensures that we fulfill our mission to provide exceptional care and support.

In our facilities nationwide, we have the distinct privilege of serving Veterans from all walks of life. Despite their diverse backgrounds and experiences, they share a common bond – an unwavering love for their country and a steadfast commitment to serve their fellow citizens. It is this dedication that inspires deep admiration for those who have come before us and fuels our drive to continually improve our care and services, ensuring we are worthy of the trust and confidence Veterans have placed in us.

On this Veterans Day, I ask each of you to pause and reflect on the contributions of our Veterans. Take a moment to honor them, celebrate those who have served and recognize those who continue to serve. Together, we will continue to treat every day as Veterans Day - ensuring their legacy of service endures, and their sacrifices are never forgotten.

With deepest gratitude,

Steven L. Lieberman MD, MBA, FACHE

Acting Under Secretary for Health

To all Veterans:

On November 11, 2025, Veterans Day, we pause to honor, recognize, and remember our Nation’s Veterans. More than 40 million Americans have served in uniform, leaving behind family, comfort, and certainty to defend freedom, at home and abroad. And more than one million have given their lives—the "last full measure of devotion”—to this nation. Their sacrifice—and the sacrifices of their families—have written the story of America.

Think of the young soldiers storming the beaches in Normandy.

Think of the young Marines raising the flag on Iwo Jima.

Think of the airmen who flew over Korea, the sailors who patrolled the waters of Vietnam, and the soldiers and Marines who patrolled the streets of Baghdad and the mountains of Afghanistan.

And think too of those who came home with wounds that cannot be seen—the invisible wounds of war that Veterans and their families carry long after the battle is over.

They know the true cost of freedom because they have paid it—with sleepless nights, missed birthdays, and in empty chairs at dinner tables.

Their service is not just history; it is the living heartbeat of our nation. And we are the beneficiaries of their vigilance, determination, and commitment to the principles of liberty upon which our nation was founded.

To the Veteran employees of San Francisco VA Health Care System, we honor and express our deepest gratitude to those who served in the United States Armed Forces. Your extraordinary courage, dedication, and sacrifice protect the freedoms we cherish. Your commitment to continuing to serve Veterans inspire us all.

As we reflect on Veterans Day, we take a moment to show appreciation for those who have served and for the families who supported them. Your unwavering strength and determination remind us of what it truly means to lead with purpose, resilience, and integrity.  Your example challenges us to serve our communities, support one another, and strive for excellence in all that we do.

May we all strive for the values our Veterans embody not just on a single day but every day.

Thank you.
